Pisgah Valley Senior Living Community ‘Pumps it for Parkinson’s

Nearly 90,000 people are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the U.S. each year.
Pisgah Valley senior living community and Pisgah Valley Wellness Center are ‘stepping in’ to help raise awareness about this disease while educating people about the fact that exercise can help ease its symptoms.
Joining the National Institute for Fitness and Sports (NIFS) in its Pump it for Parkinson’s initiative, residents, members, and staff will join the NuStep Challenge by logging 30,000 steps on each of the two NuStep machines. These will be tallied into the overall nationwide goal of accumulating 10 million total steps, representing the 10 million people worldwide living with Parkinson’s disease.
Participants in Pisgah Valley retirement community’s Challenge are encouraged to sign up for a 15–30 minute time slot to use a NuStep in the Wellness Center. Their steps will be logged in to the total. The NuStep machines are low impact, helping to strengthen muscles while providing an aerobic workout. Their latest model NuStep has a touchscreen with virtual trails.
