Bask in the Light

Circadian Rhythm

Your circadian rhythm is an internal clock that helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle, as well as, other important functions. It impacts your metabolism, mental and physical performance, immunity, and more. Bright light, especially sunlight, has an immense effect on our sleep routines.

Natural Light

If you are struggling with getting quality sleep, try to get at least 15 minutes of direct natural light first thing in the morning. This not only helps you sleep better at night but also improves your mood. Fresh light helps establish mental clarity and strong decision-making skills.

If you can’t go outside, open the shades and sit facing the window. Light exposure at different times of day can also have different effects on your circadian rhythm.

Morning light: Advances your circadian clock.

Evening and night light: Delays your circadian clock.

This disruption can lead to poor sleep and drowsiness during the day. Over time, your immune system can also take a hit and put you at risk for chronic disease and overall distress.

Make it a Habit

Getting outside has been proven to benefit your health and wellness in many ways. Take this opportunity to construct a morning practice that sets a positive tone for the day. While sitting outside in the early morning light, enjoy centering yourself and focusing on your breathing. Mindful meditation, nature, and first morning light will set you on a course for enjoyment and genuine well-being. Try this morning meditation from the Yoga Journal for an excellent fresh start.
